The "AR-15 assault rifle" is related to the massacre that took place in Orlando this morning-the deadliest mass shooting in the United States to date. As the most popular rifle in the country, it has become a symbol of both sides of the gun control debate. Update on June 14: According to the Florida authorities, the exact gun is an Italian version of a semi-automatic weapon, manufactured by Sig Sauer.

According to Florida authorities, early this morning (June 12), 29-year-old Omar Mateen shot and killed at least 50 people at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando. The same semi-automatic AR-15 model he used was illegally modified and used to kill 14 people and wound 21 people in the San Bernardino shooting at the end of 2015. In 2012, it was also used to murder 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

A little history of Slate:

AR-15 was designed in 1957 at the request of the U.S. Army. The U.S. Army asked Amalite to propose "high-speed, fully automatic and semi-automatic shooting, 20 rounds of magazines, 6 pounds of ammunition, and ability to penetrate both sides of the standard." Military helmet with 500m rifle," according to ar15.com. When it entered service in the Army in the 1960s, it was renamed M16 according to the Army's naming system. "AR-15" refers to the semi-automatic civilian rifle of the rifle.

AR-15 is semi-automatic. Therefore, although it cannot shoot bullets like the machine gun in the movie, it does reload quickly, allowing the shooter to fire at the speed and frequency of the trigger. In the debate about whether anyone really needs such a gun for home defense or sports, AR-15 has become a tipping point for gun control advocates and those who refuse to impose any restrictions on their constitutional rights to carry weapons.

After the Sandy Hook massacre, AR-15 sales soared across the United States. "AR-15, it's a bit fashionable... the younger generation likes them, they look very aggressive guns," the owner of a gun shop in Pasadena, Maryland told the New York Times at the time. A photo-intensive blog post of the National Rifle Association (NRA) praised the aesthetic appeal of assault rifles and encouraged gun owners to add silencers to make their AR-15 "cooler."

After the Sandy Hook incident, the threat of legislation restricting access to assault rifles in the United States appeared to drive demand in Florida and other states. According to the Orlando Sentinel, in the greater Orlando area, it was reported that the price of AR-15 doubled within one month after the tragedy.

According to the National Rifle Association website, in Florida, gun owners who want to own or purchase a rifle, shotgun, or pistol do not need a license. You only need to fill out an ID document and pay $8 for a background check (convicted felons, domestic abusers, and people previously declared dangerous to yourself and others may not pass).

According to the California-based non-profit Gun Violence Law Center, Florida does not require:

Like many states in the United States, Florida’s gun laws are counterintuitive with regard to large weapons. Therefore, even though there is a mandatory three-day waiting period between the purchase and delivery of pistols in Florida, there is no waiting period for guns that require two-handed holding (such as AR-15). Firearms owners in Florida are also protected by law and will not be entered into any type of state register or other records of where the firearms went in that state.

In 2014, the parents of several children murdered in Sandy Hook filed a lawsuit against gun manufacturer Remington, arguing that the military AR-15 used by Lanza should not be sold to civilians in the first place. (Several other manufacturers also sell AR-15 versions.)

"This is a war tool designed specifically for the battlefield, which is marketed and sold to the public," said Mark Barden, the father of one of the victims.

The 2005 "Weapons Legal Commercial Protection Act" protects gun manufacturers from civil lawsuits "caused by others abusing their products." The lawsuit will go to trial on April 3, 2018.
