Cleaning your oven may be one of the tasks that you postpone weeks, months, or even years, but a clean oven will ensure that your cooking environment is hygienic and will not produce odors due to burnt grease.

Here, we answer some of the most common questions about oven cleaning and provide tips and suggestions to help you keep it shiny.

To find a self-cleaning oven, please visit our oven review and use a self-cleaning filter.

Because oven grease can be stubborn, many commercial oven cleaning products contain powerful chemicals. These include glycol, ether, methylene chloride, lye (sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide), petroleum distillate and pine oil.

Oven cleaners may corrode the skin and eyes, so be sure to follow the instructions on these cleaners strictly, including wearing the correct protective gloves, glasses, and clothing, and ventilate the room when the oven cleaner is effective.

If you prefer to take the natural route, many people will choose daily necessities such as baking soda, vinegar or lemon juice.

You can make a cleansing cream with equal parts of baking soda and white vinegar. Or, mix lemon juice and salt, then rub it on any stubborn grease or burnt food area, then let it sit for a few hours before scrubbing.

No matter what you use, you need a decent brush or sponge with stain remover. An old toothbrush can help you remove grease from any corners and crevices.

However, do not use cleaners on the glass oven door. These will produce tiny scratches on the glass surface, which may make it easy to break in the future.

Follow the tips in our video to keep your oven clean and span with minimal effort.

You can use a hand-held steam cleaner to refresh the inside of the oven and remove stains on the oven door. There is no need to use harsh chemicals, high-power steam will help soften grease, dirt and food.

However, please be careful not to use the steamer near the oven elements, as this may damage it.

The inner cavity of the oven is the area most likely to become greasy after continued use. Please follow the steps below to remove the most serious dirt:

If you have a double oven, or your main oven includes a grill, please pay attention to the choice of folding grill. This means you can move the grill heating element to the side and clean behind it.

If your oven has a pyrolysis function, you should follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and use it approximately once a month. You still need to wipe off the ashes from the burned food, but this will not take up too much elbow grease. Remember that you should remove the shelf before starting the pyrolysis cycle. If you leave them inside, they will eventually change color.

When you cook at high temperatures, the catalytic lining accelerates the breakdown of fat deposits. Some ovens with a catalytic lining also have a special catalytic cleaning program that can be run when you are not cooking.

Oven racks are usually relatively simple to clean because you can easily take them out and soak them.

You can purchase a special oven rack soaking kit. You put the rack in a large resealable plastic bag, and then add professional cleaning fluid.

The fluid is extremely irritating and corrosive, so be sure to wear protective gloves and protective clothing when flushing the rack.

Or, you can soak the shelf in a large sink, trash bag, or even bathtub. Please note that certain cleaning products can be corrosive to the enamel bath, so if you follow this route, choose natural products.

A dirty glass oven door will prevent you from clearly seeing your cooking.

Rarely and often is the key here.

We recommend that you wipe the oven at least once a month. If you have cooked something that has spilled all over (such as grilled meat or bubbling casseroles), you should wipe it clean after the oven cools down.

If you notice a burning smell when the oven is preheating, this usually indicates that the previous cooking spill is gradually burning, so it is best to wipe it (while cooling) to reduce the risk of anything being "cooked".

Similarly, if there is a large amount of spillage on the oven floor, wipe it off immediately after use.

You can hire a company to visit your home and clean the oven for you. Prices vary, but expect to pay more than £40, depending on whether you are using a single oven or a double oven, and whether the service also includes cleaning the stove and range hood.

Some household cleaning services will provide oven cleaning as part of general household cleaning, but you may need to pay extra for this and provide professional cleaning products.

If you are cooking food at a slow speed, cover the food with a lid or foil to prevent it from bubbling and splashing into the oven.

Place the plate on the baking sheet instead of directly on the grill so that if the lasagna bubbling, it will drip onto the baking sheet.

Some ovens have catalytic lining or high-temperature pyrolysis, which is definitely worth using to keep the oven clean.

The catalytic oven lining (rough surface inside the oven) traps, absorbs and breaks down greasy spills, and then burns them when cooking at temperatures exceeding 200°C. Ovens usually only have linings on the sides, but sometimes you will also place them on the ceiling and back. This makes it easier to keep the oven clean, but you still need to wipe the base, door, and shelf in the traditional way.

The pyrolysis process burns off dirt and grease at very high temperatures-about 500°C. All you need to do is sweep the ashes afterwards. These procedures take one to three hours, and for safety reasons, the oven door will be locked while the cycle is running. You still need to manually clean the oven door and shelves.

When we test ovens and cookware, we will rate them based on how easy they are to clean, including whether they are self-cleaning and how easy it is to wipe or keep the different components of the oven clean. In our test, the following ovens scored high in cleaning.
